The northern pike (Esox lucius), A.K.A. jackfish, jack, northern, great northern, snake, is a muscular, agile fighter and is one of the most exciting fish you'll ever tangle with. Despite this, the pike is often regarded as a pain in the... neck by some anglers because it will eat other much sought after game fish, including bass, perch and trout in great quantities.

A voracious feeder, the pike hides out in weeds and forest debris close to shorelines and will strike at anything that comes close- including young waterbirds and frogs.

The pike is long, slender and strong with a long flat snout. The dorsal and anal fins are placed rearward, near the tail. It has broad layers of sharp, pointed teeth in the roof and jaws of its expansive mouth. (Ask any guide how sharp they are!)

The pike was designed to blend in with it's surroundings with green to olive brown sides that shade gradually to become yellow-white on the underside and belly. There are rows of wide oval spots running along the sides to distinguish the adults from the youth of the species.

Average length of a commercially caught northern pike is 19 to 29 inches, weighing in at 2 to 5 lbs. Common exceptions in commercial catches will be 15 to 20 lbs. A 1954 record still stands for northern pike taken in Canadian (Saskatchewan) waters with the monster weighing nearly 43 lbs!

The pike can be found around the world cruising the northern waters of Europe, Asia and North America. In North America, it is found in Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Quebec, Labrador, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, northeastern British Columbia and from the northern New England States to Missouri and all the way over to Nebraska.

The pike prefers warmer, slow moving, heavily overgrown rivers or the stealthy cover of weeds in the bay of a lake.

The flesh of the northern pike is firm, white, fine-textured with a delicate (but not bland) flavour. Shorelunch is somehow incomplete without at least one pike in the pan!

Anglers at Sportsman's Lodge have had great success casting and/or trolling for northerns with the following baits and lures:

2 oz Johnson Silver Minnows

1 1/2 oz Daredevil Spoons
(Red & White and Five of Diamonds)
